Split the pour into sections
Start with a sketch of the work area. Mark changes in thickness, shape, elevation, or concrete type. A rectangular slab, a circular pad, and a wall should remain separate sections even if they will be ordered from the same supplier.
Separate sections make the calculation details easier to audit and prevent one average dimension from hiding a larger or smaller part of the project. The Concrete Calculator supports up to 20 sections and combines their volumes only after each section is calculated.
Thickness, strength, reinforcement, joints, base preparation, and placement method depend on the project. Enter the values selected by your plan or qualified professional; the tool does not choose them.

Measure the shape and thickness
Use the shape that best matches what you measured. For a rectangle, record length and width. For a circle, measure straight across the center to get diameter. For a wall, record length, height, and thickness. If a reliable plan already gives an area, use the known-area option and record where that area came from.

Measure length, width, and thickness.

Confirm how the concrete will be purchased
Geometric volume is only the first output. A ready-mix supplier may sell by cubic yard or cubic meter and use a minimum load or order increment. Bagged concrete uses the yield printed on the package, not the outside dimensions of the bag.
- Ready-mix basis.Ask for the supplier’s unit, minimum order, increment, delivery fee, and mix-specific density if weight matters.
- Bag yield.Copy the yield from the selected product label or technical sheet and choose its unit.
- Extra material.Enter only an allowance you have chosen for this project. The calculator applies it once after sections are combined.
- Cost boundary.Enter material price separately; delivery, tax, labor, pumping, reinforcement, forms, and base work are not included.

Review before calling the supplier
Read the calculation details, not just the headline quantity. Check every section’s dimensions, the combined base volume, the entered extra percentage, and any rounding to bags or supplier increments. If the result looks surprising, return to the sketch and confirm the thickness and unit for each section.
Keep a copy of the estimate with the supplier quote. If the supplier uses a different yield, density, or order increment, update the corresponding field and compare the revised purchase quantity. Do not replace a product-specific value with a generic average.

Example: a rectangular patio
Suppose a patio is 20 ft long, 12 ft wide, and 4 in thick. Convert 4 in to one-third of a foot before calculating:

Unit and source notes
Length and volume conversions follow exact NIST relationships. Concrete density, bag yield, pricing, delivery, and minimum-load rules are product- and supplier-specific, so this guide does not hard-code them.
