Sketch the driveway as measurable areas

Draw the driveway, parking bay, turnaround, or path from above. Mark bends, widening sections, islands, drains, and areas that will not receive gravel. If the outline is irregular, divide it into rectangles, triangles, circles, or known-area sections instead of forcing one average length and width.

Name each section and keep the measurements with the sketch. The Gravel Calculator supports up to 20 areas, so you can compare the calculated detail with the physical layout before contacting a supplier.

Volume is not a road-design decision.

Base thickness, drainage, edge restraint, geotextile, grading, and traffic requirements depend on the site and material. Use this guide to organize quantities, then confirm construction requirements with an appropriate professional.

Record the planned depth for each layer

Write down the depth you are using for each area and keep different layers separate when they serve different purposes. A driveway may have a base layer and a surface layer with different products or depths; they should not be hidden inside one blended number.

Rectangle

Measure length and width.

Area = length × width

Triangle

Use the base and perpendicular height.

Area = base × height ÷ 2

Circle

Measure diameter across the center.

Area = π × (diameter ÷ 2)²

Volume

Apply the chosen depth to each area.

Volume = area × depth

Keep feet, inches, meters, and centimeters consistent with the selected unit system. The calculator converts the entered measurements before adding area volumes.

Use the product’s own density and package data

Gravel weight changes with rock type, grading, moisture, and the supplier’s density basis. There is no single ton-per-yard value that is correct for every product. If you need tons, enter the density printed on a quote, data sheet, or supplier confirmation.

  • Bulk material.Confirm whether the supplier sells by ton, cubic yard, cubic meter, or truckload and whether a minimum or increment applies.
  • Bagged material.Use the volume printed on the product label and round up to whole bags after all areas are combined.
  • Extra material.Enter only the allowance you have selected. The calculator does not infer compaction, settling, rutting, erosion, or spillage.
  • Cost.Enter the material price separately and ask about delivery, minimum-load charges, tax, and pickup terms.

Review site factors outside the calculator

Before ordering, compare your sketch with the actual site. Check access for delivery, turning space, slope, drainage paths, soft areas, existing base, edge restraint, and any excavation or disposal. The calculator reports material volume; it does not determine whether the site is ready for that material.

Review each area in the calculation details and keep the supplier’s product name, density, package yield, and quote beside the estimate. If the product changes, update those values rather than carrying forward an old assumption.

Example: a rectangular driveway section

Suppose one driveway section is 24 ft long, 12 ft wide, and 4 in deep. Convert the depth to feet before calculating:

Surface area24 × 12 = 288 ft²
Base volume288 × 0.333… ≈ 96 ft³
Cubic yards96 ÷ 27 ≈ 3.56 yd³

This is a geometry example, not a recommended driveway depth or density. Enter your chosen depth, then use the supplier’s density or bag volume to compare tons, bags, and cost.
