Topsoil project checklist.

Use this list to find missing information before requesting a quote, scheduling delivery, or buying bags.

Define the project before estimating

  • Write down the intended area. Identify the lawn, garden bed, raised bed, or landscaping zones that will receive material.

  • Identify excluded surfaces. Mark patios, paths, structures, roots, utilities, or other spaces that should not be counted.

  • Choose a project depth from an appropriate source. Do not treat a generic online number as a universal recommendation.

  • Note site-specific constraints. Record slopes, drainage concerns, existing soil conditions, access limits, or work that needs qualified advice.

Prepare measurements that can be checked

  • Sketch and name each zone. Keep the sketch with the estimate.

  • Record shape and dimensions. Use rectangle, circle, triangle, or a known area.

  • Attach units to every number. Write ft, in, m, cm, or the actual unit beside each measurement.

  • Record depth by zone. Separate zones when their depths differ.

  • Measure important dimensions twice. Resolve large differences before calculation.

Review the calculation, not only the final number

  • Confirm the selected unit system. Switching units should convert measurements, not reinterpret them.

  • Review every zone’s area and volume. Check that names, shapes, dimensions, and depths match the sketch.

  • Choose any extra percentage intentionally. The calculator applies only the value you enter; it does not infer compaction or settling.

  • Keep base and adjusted volume visible. This makes supplier rounding easier to understand.

  • Save or print the estimate. Keep the calculation with supplier notes and the original measurements.

Collect supplier-specific information

If buying bulk
  • Sales unit: cubic yard, cubic meter, or another unit
  • Minimum order and order increment
  • Material price in that exact unit
  • Product description and relevant material information
  • Density or weight basis only if weight matters
If buying bags
  • Printed volume per bag and its unit
  • Price per bag or current multi-bag price
  • Package weight for handling and transport planning
  • Availability of the same product and bag size
  • Current return or exchange terms
For either format
  • Taxes, delivery charges, minimum-load fees, or deposits
  • Quote validity and current availability
  • Product suitability questions for the intended project
  • What happens if delivery cannot be completed
  • Who to contact if the delivered product or quantity is disputed

Plan delivery, transport, and handling

  • Confirm vehicle and site access. Consider width, gates, turns, overhead clearance, ground conditions, and local restrictions.

  • Agree on an acceptable delivery location. Protect drains, roads, sidewalks, landscaping, utilities, and surfaces as appropriate.

  • Plan how material will move to the work area. Estimate the tools, containers, people, and time involved.

  • Prepare temporary storage. Consider weather, runoff, access, neighboring property, and how long material may remain there.

  • Handle packages and equipment safely. Follow product labels, equipment instructions, and appropriate professional guidance.

Final review before purchase

    Bulk increment or bag volume comes from the selected supplier or product label.

    Material price is separated from delivery, tax, labor, equipment, and other fees.

    Access, delivery location, handling, and storage have been confirmed.

    The supplier or appropriate professional has reviewed project-specific questions.

Keep uncertainty visible.

If an input is unknown, leave it unknown instead of substituting an unsupported default. The calculator can still show geometric volume without pretending to know density, price, packaging, or delivery terms.
